IS Linux installer has bad UI for unsupported NIC

Hi. SIPB has been getting a lot of users trying to install Linux
Athena with an unsupported NIC. The installer's way of indicating
this seems to be to ask where to find media for packages--hard disk or
cdrom. This is very confusing both to the users and really to most
people at SIPB who have not experienced the failure mode.
Would it be possible for the installer to fail in a more useful
manner?
