I tried installing the SIPB IBM again, ( with the noapic boot option, 
that for some people, according to websearches,  appeared to stop the
"eepro100: wait_for_cmd_done" problem.) That didn't work, and the 
installer froze (and stopped responding to pings) about 20 seconds after 
the machine displayed "installing rpms"

I then tried installing debian woody on the machine for the purpose of getting
some information on the ethernet card, to compare it with other IBM's
which have successfully installed. From the install cd itself, I ran
lspci -v, dmesg, and uname -a , and have attached the output below.
