The restrictions that I explained to you are *not* Athena's
but are in fact inherent in the 4.3BSD Unix design. The VICE
filesystem developed at CMU solves this problem by allowing a quota to
be associated with a "volume" (what we call a "locker"). Work is in
progress to import the VICE file system to Athena and if it operates
properly in our environment we will seriously consider switching to it
from our current usage of NFS (or at least making it an alternative
storage mechanism for group lockers like "crlmodels").
What we at Athena did was change the interpretation of a "0"
quota to mean exactly that, zero, rather then the Berkeley
interpretation of "infinite." This change indeed leads to the problem
that you ran into (actually Angela ran into). However the other side
of the coin is that without this change all of your UROP students
would have an effective INFINITE quota on the fileserver that
"crlmodels" was on. Our newer fileservers have disks which are quite
large, so this is even more INFINITE then it would have been on the
old VAX 11/750 systems. This has caused those of us trying to manage
Athena's disk farm great headaches in the past. We are attempting to
move toward a manageable system.
It would be useful to us if you could provide some more
information about exactly what happened when Angela attempted to edit
legend.c. EMACS should have reported an error, at which point she
should have been able to save the file out to some space on the
workstation's hard disk (or her home locker) and gotten help. Did she
exit EMACS even though it reported an unsaved buffer, or did EMACS
fail to provide an indication of the problem?
For now I have restored legend.c (it is now owned by you), and
have assigned Angela a quota of 1000K on crlmodels.
