What were you trying to do?
Use the `@' option to dig to choose a nameserver.
What's wrong:
% dig @w20-ns.mit.edu. www.cnn.com.
dig: Couldn't find server 'w20-ns.mit.edu.': address family not supported
According to "truss", no system call is failing with the indicated
error. The lookup for w20-ns is returning NXDOMAIN (I meant "w20ns")
but the error is not being reported properly. I didn't even think
to check whether the name existed because of the misleading error
message.
What should have happened:
dig: Couldn't find server 'w20-ns.mit.edu.': Host not found
