The problem appears to be intermittent, actually. At the moment for me,
both the dd command and ps2pdf are working; for Ken they worked for a
bit after you sent the mail, but now they're no longer working. (he's on
a dialup, so no turning things off and on as root). But that suggests
it's /dev/random in fact.
