inconsistent X server configs

I just had a user come into sipb complaining that courseware worked on
one cluster dell gx150, but not on another. I didn't think to check
which X server (3.3.6 vs 4.x) the machines were running, but one was
using 16 bits, and the other was using 24 bits. As a control (sort
of), the gx150 in the SIPB office was using 16 bits.
I hand-edited the XF86Config-4 on the cluster machine to use 24 bits,
and now the coursware works.
The real bug here, I think, is that it appears that the X server and
configuration one gets on a gx150 seems to be indeterminate.
