You didn't include here the relevant information that you zephyred
about; from what I gathered:
* You were able to get the passwd prompt to display, by using the
mouse, that the passwd box timed out as usual, and that the
screensaver moved normally.
* That alt-shift-f11-greyslash wasn't sufficient to kill the
xserver.
* That the keyboard was working usefully after rebooting the
machine with the soft power button.
