scp loses connection on large files

On Linux-Athena 8.4.17 machine, with a 240-meg file:

On the Linux-Athena 8.4-2001022316 release, with a 60-meg file:

lost connection
This happens fairly reliably a few minutes into the download. It
doesn't happen as long as I'm actually logged in on both machines.
(IIRC it also happens when I'm sitting in front of WAM and try to do
the reverse operation.)
