Yes.

Sure. On a GX1, /etc/conf.modules is:
alias eth0 3c59x
You didn't ask for it, but on a GX110 (the new kind),
/etc/conf.modules is:
alias eth0 3c59x
alias sound es1371
Incidentally, a freshly installed machine seems to fill in the NETDEV,
MACHINE, and SYSTEM variables in rc.conf just fine.
