This was our stock reply at that time as well. If you read through the
various bug reports on this topic, there's a message from me in reply
to someone else's bug where I showed that actually the default
configuration (at least for people whose netscape config files were
created in the same era as mine) seemed to be to use the plugin, and I
needed to _create_ mailcap/mime.types in order to make it not use the
plugin.
This may have been fixed since then (no one ever mentioned it to me if
it was), but at the time the consensus seemed to be that it would
require both a fix to the global config AND a round of fix-netscape
hacking to make it work for everyone.
