dash allows the HOSTTYPE environment variable to override the
compiled-in default. tcsh is setting HOSTTYPE to i386-linux. (I
thought our system dotfiles used to reset it, but it seems not.) I'll
come up with a fix to tcsh at least.
A workaround in the meantime is to write "-linux" and "-i386-linux".
