gnuplot is good for producing plots from scripts, but having not used
it for a while I now appreciate how much nicer a graphical interface
(tecplot) is for quickly printing data.  gnuplot is also pretty
moribund developmentwise.

But, Yes, I think the gnuplot locker is where the cannonical version should
be maintained, by swmaint (mostly myself and alex), and the gnu
version should be removed.
