Last night, a PC in E40-1xx was accidentally brought up on the same
address as DCL (Solaris; Athena Server 8.3.23). After some AFS
timeouts were reported, I found I couldn't run any programs I tried,
even some on local disk; I kept getting bus errors. Both my shell
(tcsh) and some of the programs I tried running (su, fs) are on local
disk. I tried running them with explicit pathnames as well as
without.
These problems continued even after the other machine was shut down.
I wasn't able to get root access from within my login session, and
other machines appeared unable to reach DCL (or, at least, another
machine that was using DCL for name service was getting no response).
I wound up having to hit the power button to trigger a shutdown.
