What were you trying to do?
Read news with default Emacs version and default gnus version.
What's wrong:
Gnus reloads the entire 400+k newsgroup list from the
NNTP server at less than 1k/second. So it takes long time to
start gnus.
What should have happened:
Until recently, gnus only took a few seconds to check for new newsgroups
and do whatever it does to update .newsrc. It should only take a
minute or less to start gnus.

Comments: This began some days ago on the dialup machines. Except
buzzword-bingo, which only began to do this on or after after
Saturday, Aug 21.
