I assume you mean a message that is in another folder?

It sounds like xmh isn't always updating mh's internal pointers about
what folder it's looking at. If you say "dist +inbox" instead of just
"dist", it ought to work.

xmh is a pretty old piece of software, and isn't being maintained by
anyone any more. You might want to look at "exmh" in the sipb locker
(also available in the dash menu), which is a newer version that has
more features, like MIME support. (It also has a "Redistribute"
command under the "More..." menu, which would let you do a "dist" of
the message you're looking at without having to use the command line.)
