We've had a few problems with people telnetting into our workstations using
the 8.3 release. Sometimes (but not always), the home directory does not get
attached. The failure to add a user to the group file is a new problem. As
Joe Ferreira notes below, he is a member of too many groups for them all to be
in his group list at once. On Windows PCs we generally use Cygnus ktelnet (a
freeware, open source, Kerberos 5 encrypted telnet package; see
http://www.cygnus.com/techie/kerbnet/). We've seen login problems on the
workstations 'depot' and 'aalto'.
Lastly, we have also had problems forcing encrypted telnet sessions on the
workstation 'pelli' (by adding the '-e' switch to the end of the telnetd line
in /etc/athena/inetd.conf). While HostExplorer and the Athena telnet programs
seem to work OK, the Cygnus ktelnet will print a banner, then some garbage
characters, then hang. I saw similar behavior on 'aalto' (an 8.3 machine) and
'charleseliot' (an 8.2 machine). I realize the the Cygnus program is not a
supported Athena application, but it works great when encryption is not
required, and it's easier to use than HostExplorer.

Tom,
Once again today, I couldn't authenticate when loging
into Aalto using cygnus v5. This morning, I had no problem.
But now, I get:

This happened for a time yesterday as well. Do you
suppose that this is some bug in the new release?
Is this some 'group file' bug related to the fact that
I'm in more than 14 groups? Please pass this along
to whomever would be interested.
