What were you trying to do?
Log in while the AFS fileserver my home directory is on was down.
What's wrong:
I had logged into the machine earlier in the day, so there were
presumably some cached files and/or directory listings associated
with my home directory. Instead of getting a temporary home directory,
I got my AFS home directory, but wasn't able to do anything more than
get a directory listing of the top directory. Since nothing in my
home directory was readable, not even the default .cshrc was read.
What should have happened:
I should probably have gotten a temporary home directory and a
warning message. Perhaps AFS should have flushed cache entries for
things on file servers that are down. Or perhaps the login code should
have checked if the home directory was on a down fileserver.
