I also meant to add something about RealPlayer:
The reason we don't have a current version of this on Athena is that the
vendor has refused to allow us to install it on a network file system,
even for internal, educational use. The license for the free player only
applies to local installation on a single machine.
I have repeatedly asked them to change this policy for over a year and
a half, as recently as this week, and gotten nowhere,
