OK- here goes-
There are two tests:
1. VTK test- uses non-Sun software. To run:
add vtkit_v2.2
set_vtk_demos
In window that opens:
make Mace (compilation warnings are not relevant and can be ignored)
./Mace
running Mace should pop open a nice 3d image that can be manipulated with
mouse buttons,
2. Java 3d test- uses only Sun software. To run:
add -f java_v1.2ref
cd /mit/java_v1.2ref/distrib/sun4x_56/demo/java3d/HelloUniverse
java HelloUniverse
should pop open a window with a spinning, colored cube (takes a long time
to start).
Data for 4 machines follows:

behavior: "old" Ultra 5 where VTK test fails with error message:
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 145 (X3D-PEX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 24 (PEX_BeginRendering)
Serial number of failed request: 164
Current serial number in output stream: 169
Doing
setenv XGLNOPEX
makes it work, but it runs extremely slowly.
Java 3d test works.

It seems to me that we have at least 2 problems here- the "PEX thing"
on all the Ultra 5s, and the "bad Ultra 10s" where nothing works
right.
