mwm sees keypresses as different creatures if numlock is on. It's not
alone; I run into this all the time with ctwm, although I don't use
ctwm for as much.
xmodmapping numlock away by default would seriously violate the
principle of least surprise. Modifying mwm to ignore that bit in the
source isn't practical on IRIX where we don't build it (and besides,
all that stuff is in the guts of the Motif toolkit). Modifying the
app-defaults file to accept such events with or without numlock might
be doable.
