Follow-up:
Fixed. He wrote me that it happened no matter what kind of cluster machine
he was logged onto, which implied to me that something was wrong with his
netscape files instead.
I suggested he temporarily remove his address book file, forcing Netscape
to start a fresh one ... and all was well.
