Lately mail notification has been turned off a lot on some po servers
(po9 in particular) due to load. That is probably what you're
observing, not problems with zephyr.
zctl ret will tell you whether you still have
<mail,pop,karen@ATHENA.MIT.EDU> subs. (zctl ls just lists your
.zephyr.subs file.)
