Mathematica fails on Linux

I tried to run Mathematica w/ Notebook Interface from
the Athena locker "math" on my Linux system. It fails to
start up, and pops up a dialog box with the error message:
Startup Error
-------------
A serious error has occured during startup. You may continue, but
Mathematica may crash or exit suddenly. Error type: 199.
Exit Continue
No matter which button I press, it always exits. I never even get to
see the Mathematica window.
What is error type 199? The error message gives me no hint as to what
to do to correct the problem!
Here is some information about my machine:
Linux sunrise.mit.edu 2.0.18 #9 Sun Jan 25 21:35:46 EST 1998 i586
