| I believe I have noticed this bug as well on the Ultra 10... I think

| framebuffers, somehow.
Tom is correct. The 24-bit frame buffers support overlay masking planes,
and those appear to be written to by the OpenBOOT monitor (sometimes),
and not rewritten by the X server or frame buffer driver as part of a refresh
operation.
Sun has had somewhat less than wonderfully stable with regard to their
frame buffer support in Solaris for 24-bit frame buffers. There have
been a number of patches for both the Creator and the Elite series of
frame buffers.
On my Ultra 30, with a Creator (not 3D), I experienced a problem
similar to this, and also experienced the same on SIPB's Ultra 60. I
was able to make most of the problems go away by upgrading to the
current release of those patches. I'm not certain if they were completely
eliminated or frequency reduced.
Athena might want to verify that the latest Elite patches are applied.
