Yes, I know logging out clears the screen.  Logging out kills the
X server.  It's my opinion that there should be a way to refresh
the screen that does not involve killing the X server. 

I did not really expect Athena to be able to fix this problem. 
However, I would appreciate it if you pass it upstream to Sun,
so that they are notified about the issue, and so that they can
declare something about whether or not they will fix it.

If "bugs" is the wrong place for email about bugs in Solaris,
I'd appreciate knowing what the proper address is.  (I had
assumed, perhaps erroneously, that you would forward this bug
report to Sun once you determined that it was outside of Athena's
realm of responsibility.)
