it was a service error 79, it has been power cycled and everything
initially seemed normal displaying "processing job" and making normal
noises, then it went to the error message and froze again, the active
job was considered suspect and removed (I had heard of windows jobs
potentially generating such an error mesage):
athena% lpq -P ajax
active rodarte 61 active rodarte 61 active rodarte 61 C:/NET/SPOOL/~LP00002.TMP 246878 bytes
.
.
.
it later stopped again with the same symptoms on a similar looking job
athena% lpq -Pajax
active fawaz 128 active fawaz 128 active fawaz 128 C:/NET/SPOOL/~LP00000.TMP 43715 bytes
.
.
.
dkk who helped out by removing one of the jobs in question says:
"The spool directory was missing the "cf" file (control file) for the
job, that the job appears to be a printer test page from an MS-Windows
PC, and that I saved a copy of the second one (in Mulch's spool
directory)."
an apparent symptom is the tripple printing of the username, job
number, status fields by lpq we had identifed the second job as a
potential problem based on that when it was still waiting to be que'd
18th fawaz 128 18th fawaz 128 18th fawaz 128 C:/NET/SPOOL/~LP00000.TMP 43715 bytes
I think this is all the useful information I can provide on this, but
if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask
Jer
thanks to sesamest for running in to powercycle the printer and
reporting it's state several times throughout
