Greg,
Thanks for sticking with this.
The kermit you built doesn't seem to be any different from the one
currently in the modem locker. I can see three differences at least
between those two kermits and the one in william chuang's locker.
1) when "sending" from Athena to home, the old Kermit doesn't
pass file size information to my system, so I get no file
size and no progress report (i.e. est download time and
percent completed). Kermit.new does.
2) <Ctrl-C> in the old Kermit quits the program, and in
Kermit.new, it gets you back to the C-Kermit prompt.
3) The version information is different:
Old Kermit: 4E(072) 24 Jan 89, AT&T System III/System V
Kermit.new: 5A(185) Beta-7 27 Oct 92 AT&T System V R4
The former Kermit.new from the modem locker used to send the file size, too,
but I don't remember if it shared the other two differences. Also,
William's Kermit.new doesn't seem to send any faster than Kermit. I
thought the former Kermit.new sent much faster than the Kermit at the time,
so even William's might not be the same as modem's former Kermit.new.
I hope some of that helps.
Mark Kendall

Hi. After a lot of confusion, I think we determined that the "kermit"
currently installed for Solaris in the modem locker was probably
copied out of the release at the time, which is why it's such an old
version.
I've rebuild kermit for Solaris 2.4 from the sources in the modem
locker. Please try using
/afs/.athena.mit.edu/system/modem/arch/sun4m_54/bin/kermit
(sorry for the long path) and let us know if it works better. If it
does, we'll release the locker so that just running "kermit" does the
right thing.
(For the Athena 8.2 release, we'll be upgrading kermit to a still more
recent version, and putting it back into the release. But that won't
affect you for a while yet.)
