mvsilis reports that he can get a machine to stripe out by
1. .environment with "set skip_sgi"
2. use vtwm.gamma - access things using the built in menus.
in five to ten seconds, the system will be down in blue stripe.
there are certain specific machines that do this. it is not yet
known exactly why this is tied to specific machines.
