I relaized this just after I sent the mail

OK...let me rephrase the question.  What is rel-eng doing to remedy this
problem?  In the last 40 hours or so 18 email messages have bounced to
postmaster becasue of this 'fix'.  It is not clear to me whether the users
mail is actually being delivered to the recipient (maybe you should do some
testing).  I also imagine that users would not be happy to know that there is
a larger non-zero chance of personal mail they send ending up in other peoples
mail boxes.

I would also like to point out that we did not notice this earlier because of
an artifact of how we do testing.  Most beta machines are private
workstations, where the primary user is always in /etc/passwd.  Maybe you
should consider expanding 'early-test'

This is an annoyance...not as serious as the above bug.  The fact that all of
hte machines exhibitting this behavior are in 37 is kind of interesting...
