Thanks for the reply. I think I've got a file which can always make it
punt. As Jonathon's mail said, it seems to be very much tied into
next/prev/rescale. Any of these operations, when performed too quickly
before the current page is displayed, will punt you.
I put the file in my public directory. If you want to be logged out in
a hurry, xdvi the file and hit 'next' repeatedly (very quickly). If
this doesn't work, hit 'prev' repeatedly. I guarantee that before you
scroll back and forth more than 3 or 4 times, you'll be staring at the
owl. (Sometimes before I even get to the end of the document the first
time, it's splitsville.)
If it helps at all, the console then says a bunch of stuff about I/O
error:display before everything whites out.

p.s. I almost forgot. This only happens with the SIPB xdvi. The
athena version does not display postscript files. I think the athena
one won't crash because without PS display capabilities, the current
page comes up so fast that you can't really hit next more than once
before it's already being displayed.
