If you go to a cluster, you will see RT's sitting in 3 different,
nonfunctional states.
1. Blank screen. (I think this is due to the console output
redirection already reported).
2. Blank console except for a message about being unable to
reset mouse.
3. X screensaver locked on, load = 1.0.
There seem to be 2 varieties of the last one. One has the X logo
displayed, the other does not. Yesterday this happened suddenly
while a user was working (just after the window manager started
[i.e. beeped] the screen went into screensaver mode and the load
shot up to one). The only fix on a public workstation is to
reboot.
