It looks like there is no /mit/xess/arch/i386_linux2. You can just
make it a symlink to i386_linux1. Also, there is a Linux2 directory
for Xess 3.1, but not 3.0.

What were you trying to do?
execute "xess" without sepcifying the entire path from an
i386_linux2 machine (linux 2.0 kernel architecture). there is
only a directory for i386_linux1. perhaps a link would help.
