I'm pretty sure that your .Xresources file is incorrect; you have:
XTerm*Scrollbar: false
and the xterm man page has:
scrollBar (class ScrollBar)
Specifies whether or not the scrollbar should be
displayed. The default is ``false.''
Case is significant.

I do not want Athena to get into the position of overriding every
boneheaded maneuver that the OS vendors decided to put in; there's a
lot of complexity in that approach. I've overridden some of the
Solaris xterm defaults, but they created a serious problem (xterm was
interpreting PageUp and PageDown, which are used by applications).
This default (along with the color defaults) may be annoying, but it
doesn't create any significant problems.
We can, of course, file a bug report with SGI, but I don't know of any
convincing way to argue that "Scrollbars should not be on by default,"
so SGI would be likely to ignore us. So it's probably not worth the
effort.
