What's wrong:
My initial xterm comes up with the font looking fuzzy. Close
examination shows that about every other vertical line is blacked out.
On starting a window manager and moving the focus out of the window,
everything goes normal.
I logged out and the xlogin window was doing the same thing,
until I moved the mouse over the text widgets. The mouse cursor
changed, and the lines were fixed.
I logged back in with no customizations, and dash was the same
way, plus the labels on all the icons.
Yesterday, emacs once displayed the same problem not in the
whole window, but only on text displayed in a color it hadn't previously
displayed. I tried to get a window dump, but xwd somehow fixed the
problem, and the dump looked normal.
I showed this behavior to mbarker, cfields and vrt.
What should have happened:
Fewer random acts of kindness.
