John,

I'm probably in the best position to answer this for now. The short answer
is "most likely not anytime soon". Academic Computing Services, my group,
maintains and pays for the Cygnus platforms we already have, and our
primary mission is to support undergraduate education on current Athena
platforms- it is interesting to envisage Linux machines being in that
category (we have been thinking about that), but this is not the case
now.

We have entered into a partnership with SIPB to support Linux versions
of Athena software to the extent that this is possible- for the most part
these are Third Party packages where existing licenses allow us to add
Linux versions at little or no cost; Cygnus wuould not be such a case as
they charge an equal amount for each platform (and the fee is substantial).
I don't believe that SIPB would have the funding to cover this either.

Your idea is an interesting one, and I will keep it in mind should any
opportunity or other interest come up. In the meantime, you can of course
use the version of gcc supplied with various Linux distributions.

PS: the Discuss meeting suggest on Athena is probably the best place to
send ideas like this (Email to suggest@mit.edu).
