Problem when using Adobe fonts with xterm

Athena Workstation (VS2000) Version 6.0R Mon Nov 7 16:19:33 EST 1988
Try the following:
xterm -fn courier-bold14 &
In the xterm window, type the letters gpqgpq .
Go to the next line (perhaps by \[Return]), and type the letters again.
Note that the new line overwrites the bottom of the old one.
This is quite irritating.
