I started up an xterm, and it appeared in this state:

It looks like someone's old shell didn't die.  I found the X screensaver active
before logging on (i.e. the login process after the last person logged out
didn't time out).  There have been infrequent reports to consulting about
similar incidents with programs continuing to output into a window after the 
owner logs out (so that the next person to log in sees random messages in his 
window, along with his own work; the most common program seems to be a shell
script to alternate printing out a fortune and sleeping for a few minutes).
