If when a user goes to register with Athena, he/she gives no middle
initial, the program records this as a single space so that his/her name
comes out "Joe Doe" instead of "Joe Doe". This looks really silly and
should be fixed. Note that both the register program should be fixed
AND a program should be run over the sms database to fix the names of
the users who have already registered.

I apologize if this has already been addressed (I am about 24
hours behind in my mail):

This is NOT a bug in register or SMS at all. It is my fault.
The initial finger information (which is only initialized to the full
name) is set when the registrar's data is loaded. This data was loaded
manually this year by me, I wrote an Emacs Macro to generate the full
name from the LAST, FIRST MIDDLE (yep, it was all in upper case). My
macro blew it for people without a middle initial, and given the scope
of the task I didn't think it was worth redoing just to fix this.
