System name: solon
Type and version:	KN02ca 7.7G / SPARC/Classic 7.7Q
Display type: PMAG-DV / cgthree

What were you trying to do?

Well I was trying to install a test server but that is not important. I
changed my mind last minute and instead of using a Sun, I used a maxine so
that the host type and hesiod information was wrong

What's wrong:

well, it booted after my install and started xlogin and then started doing the
public workstation cleanup...this included copying the password file from the
srvd, the sun srvd. This resulted in 'x's in the password field of the passwd
file instead of '*' or an encrypted password. As a result I could not log in
as root (at all). I was not able to log in as a normal user with xlogin
because the xsession failed. I was however able to login on the console as a
normal user, but had to force my way to root (you can't su without an
encrypted passwd field!)

What should have happened:

The machine should have noticed that it had the wrong system packs and it
should have failed to currupt system files.
