I stand corrected -- most users do have MANPATH set; however, I and
many others do not, and do not experience problems with it.
I do not recall the details of the kernel problem I mentioned in the
6.0C kernels, and it may be that seemingly random factors -- such as
the environment variable settings in general, not any particular one
-- would cause it to appear or disappear.
If this is the case -- and I am not yet sure that it is -- the setting
of MANPATH before running zwgc was not so much an undocumented bugfix
as an inadvertent one. (Changing the setting of the PATH variable,
for example, would also have affected it.) The kernel problem is a
fairly straightforward one, easily fixed once we became aware of it.
