This depends on the Athena platform, I think...

Not quite; though that's what most people use, since the
CNAME of whois.internic.net (which points to rs.internic.net)
is available, using that instead would be a good idea.

It should be noted that a new version of whois.c can be obtained
from rs.internic.net (:-)) by ftp...; a shell wrapper would also
do fine.
