whois seems to _still_ be pointed at the military whois server.
which means it doesn't find anything non-military
unless the user knows to use -h rs.internic.net.
the default should be changed to the non-milnet whois server:
rs.internic.net
this bug was first introduced almost two years ago,
and i thought it had been fixed, but apparently not.
incidentally I'm on an rs600-320
