Recently (actually, with the advent of 7.7 machines, starting with
bill-the-cat), I have been having trouble with the X server on suns
sort of randomly dying on me. I can't find a particular action which
causes it, but essentially, the screen freezes (mouse movements and
typing produce no effects) and a little bit later, the xlogin screen
returns. Further investigation at one point found that session_gate
was still running (just as a data point), so it wasn't that dying for
some mysterious reason... I have only had this happen on 7.7 suns.
I'm usually running an xterm, emacs (19), xclock, xscreensaver, and
zwgc. My window manager is vtwm.gamma, and I've usually got some sort
of gif displayed on the root.
If there is anything else that might be useful, let me know...
