This is probably not really a bug, but suboptimal behavior. There is no way
to tell WHY a display could not be opened. This most recently caused trouble
on a machine that used host tables instead of name service and was unable to
resolve the name in the DISPLAY variable (but there was no way to tell this).
A more likely cause is a misspelled DISPLAY or failure to xhost.
