strange behaviour -- Athena on SPARCclassic

Every now and then, when I log on to a Sun SPARCclassic in an Athena cluster,
the console window is a bit slow to come to life. The dreaded

"Waiting for workstation to finish activating...
Done."

message appears. Then

Athena Workstation (SUN4m) Version 7.6R
Setting up environment...

etc.

I start up a windowing application from xterm -- eg xmh&. The window opens and
appears for a brief flash, then the session *dies*. The console message says
"Broken pipe or... KillClient blah:0:0." And we get back to the Athena login
screen.

I log in a second time, and everything works fine and dandy.

This setup has repeated itself a number of times, in identical fashion, only on
SPARCs, and on SPARCs in different clusters.

I'd be grateful if you could give me a hint as to what might be happening.
My configuration (.cshrc, .login, .environment...) is all vanilla.

Tibor
