What's wrong:
Just before login has completed, a crash occurs and I get logged out
with the console message 'broken pipe' ... blah blah. I think it has
something to do with a call to the graphics program xv in my .startup file.
However, it doesn't occur every time, so it may be a bug in X itself.
What should have happened:
should have logged me in
