Hi Gary,
The file main.bib was actually only added to the thesis locker this
spring as a reference for the formats for various types of entries (it
was never intended for use). It has nothing to do with the chap1.tex
file and as such we have never recommended that users try to latex AND
bibtex the template. I would hesitate to use main.bib as the citation
entries for the template though, since they have nothing to do with
each other and that may in and of itself cause confusion. If you
wanted to come up with a new sample chap1tex which did include
citations using entries in main.bib I'll be happy to put that in the
thesis locker.

P.S. The completed frame thesis template is also in the thesis
locker. If you read /mit/frame/thesis/README that gives the
instructions you would need if you were to create a minicourse for it
this spring. If you print out /mit/frame/thesis/chapter.doc that
gives the detailed explanations on actually using frame itself for the
thesis.
