Problem is definitely associated with hide_console -- various
combinations of hiding and showing the console recreate the problem,
even when typed at the command line. Not always hiding, not always
showing, but sometimes either one.
When the screen blacks, it looks like it's going to a text mode
(there's a little green underscore cursor in the top left corner).
The font-size changing is somewhat more puzzling -- when the screen
comes back, the size of all my windows is such that an 80-column
window covers about 60% of the width of the screen, which is not
usual.
