So, oliver, our rs6k, became a feely-test machine by virtue of somehow
being set to autoupdate and using beta-sys for packs. (After we
reinstalled the machine from floppy, since the autoupdate ran out of
space partway through and then happily continuted trying to update,
trashing the machine.), I encountered the following bugs:

(before reinstall, after autoupdate)

o fs help sysname returns a usage message. `fs sysname' returns
`Invalid argument', as does `fs sysname foo'

o after mounting afs (via ni) and system packs (via explicit path -
@sys didn't work; see above), I tried to run /srvd/update_ws. It
reported `It seems that you already have this update', so I removed
the last two lines from /etc/athena/version with ed.
/srvd/update_ws again said `It seems that you already have this
update'. I checked /etc/athena/version. It didn't exist. (problem
with ed? I didn't check the file between writing it and running
update_ws) I touched the file and reran /srvd/update_ws. `It seems
that you already have this update'. I cp'd gdss_public_key to
/etc/athena/version. `It seems that you already have this update'.
Then I removed the file and rebooted. No help. I gave up, since
Tom had finished making the first part of the install floppy, and
  started the reinstall.

(after reinstall)

o the machine came up `normally' and autoupdated, starting at 7.3a and
seemingly taking each update sequentially. A lot of it failed (not
too surprisingly :-), but it seemed to be a happy feely-test machine.

o Xlogin: go up to a feely-test machine. Type in your username. type
in the wrong password. The `bad passwd' dialog window will map.
You might even see it start to draw some text in it. The X server
  will exit.

At this point I gave up and used another machine. More bugs once I
get some time to play with the machine again...
