First of all, your message should have been sent to
ftp-bugs@pit-manager.mit.edu. Yes, I know, the pit-manager ftp server
told you to write to ftp-bugs@athena.mit.edu, but that's because of a
bug on pit-manager which I've since fixed. If you need to contact the
administrator of pit-manager again, please use
ftp-bugs@pit-manager.mit.edu.
Second, the files you refer to are compressed with "compress". To
find out where to get a program to uncompress them, see:
Subject: comp.compression Frequently Asked Questions (part 1/3)
Newsgroups: comp.compression,news.answers,comp.answers
Available in the indicated USENET newsgroup(s), or via anonymous ftp from
rtfm.mit.edu (18.172.1.27) in the file:
/pub/usenet/news.answers/compression-faq/part1
Also available from mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu by sending a mail
message containing:
send usenet/news.answers/compression-faq/part1
Send a message containing "help" to get general information about the
mail server.
Third, note that if you ask for files from pit-manager without
specifying the ".Z" suffix in your request, they will automatically be
uncompressed at pit-manager's end of the connection and be sent to you
as ASCII text. However, I prefer you not do this unless you
absolutely positively can't get an uncompress program for your
machine, because it puts additional load on mine.
Fourth, note that when transferring ".Z" files, you have to do it in
"binary" mode.
I hope I've answered your questions adequately. If not, please feel
free to concat me again.
